This semester is a challenge for me and also in the semester I study a lot of useful skills during difficult times. Because of the pandemic, my school has been closed and people need to take online classes. For me, this is the biggest challenge because I come back to my home country and the time difference is the biggest one for me during this difficult time. But, I found my professor and my classmate also are exciting for this semester which let me feel more hopeful. After this, in the class JOUR 226 which helps me master the knowledge point about how to become a real journalist and I also get the skills to make interviews and videos.
Initially, during the first 4 weeks, my professor taught me how to make Photo Story and Audio Story. After taking the class, I know how to make the story vivid and how to attract people to read it. For the Photo Story, the important point is the photo’s moment, light, feature, and composition. Journalists need to write a short summary of the images which can help the reader to understand more about the story. For the Audio Story, journalists need to take care of the quality of voice and the environment because both can totally affect audio quality. Both skills are really helpful for me to understand write a story and make an interview are not easy and both skills also enhance my ability to write a story.
After this, the most interesting part of the JOUR 226 is the Video Story. My topic is talking about the recovery of the pandemic in China, such as public facilities, entertainment, public transportation, and medical facilities. Firstly, I have never tried to make a video before, and this is not easy. I need to record a video from during the pandemic and after the pandemic. The video needs to be vivid to shows what is the difference between during the coronavirus outbreak and after the coronavirus under control. Also, I have interview three people who are international students from three different countries which is significant to shows the difference of fighting with the coronavirus between each country. Especially, the three people are really excited about the interview because they know how hard for them to live in another country. After the coronavirus outbreak, people are having increased discrimination for Chinese people which leads to Chinese people are suffering unfair treatment. The interview totally shows the Chinese people’s real life in the other country. The part also helps me to master how to edit video. Thus, I believe the Video Project is the best part of this semester.
In conclusion, although, this semester is difficult for us to focus on our class, such as the risk of infect coronavirus and travel ban. However, our professor has prepared very interesting courses and assignments for me, so that we can learn useful knowledge in the distance course. For example, the video project and interview this semester have taught me how to ask questions, under what circumstances to shoot videos, and how to show the most authentic information to the audience in the shortest time. What we have learned in the class of JOUR 226 this semester is very useful practical knowledge. I am very happy and honored to attend JOUR 226, which taught me how to be a journalist.
